Let’s face it: green isn’t just a buzzword anymore. It’s the way forward. Consumers are increasingly looking for environmentally responsible products, and businesses that prioritise sustainability gain a competitive edge. At Lotus Labels, we understand the importance of eco-friendly packaging and labelling. That’s why we offer a variety of sustainable label materials designed to reduce environmental impact while maintaining high performance. But choosing the right eco-friendly label isn’t just about the material—it’s about ensuring that the label, adhesive, and packaging all work together in harmony and with regard to available recycling options.

What Makes a Label Eco-Friendly?

Eco-friendly labels are designed with sustainability in mind. The materials used in these labels typically fall into at least one of the following categories:

Made from Renewable Resources (In whole or in part) – These labels are produced using natural, plant-based materials such as sugarcane fibre, bamboo, or FSC-certified paper.

Made from Recycled Content (In part or at 100%) – Labels can be crafted from post-consumer recycled paper or plastic, reducing the demand for virgin materials.

Recyclable – Labels that can be easily removed or processed along with packaging waste help streamline recycling efforts.

Compostable – Compostable labels decompose within a set time frame, (usually around 180 days) in a commercial composting facility under specific conditions (heat, moisture and bacteria). The breakdown process doesn’t release any toxins or microplastics, instead it creates, nutrient-rich compost to nourish plants.

Biodegradable – Biodegradable labels break down naturally over time, with the help of living organisms  (funghi, bacteria) however do not release nutrients back into the earth. Biodegradation can happen slowly, and times may vary, as there is no specific time frame and some materials may leave microplastics behind.

Label Guidance: Matching The Right Materials To The Right Product

One of the most crucial aspects of sustainable labelling is ensuring that the label is compatible with the product and its packaging. If a product is designed to be recyclable in a dedicated recycling stream, but its label is not, it can disrupt the recycling process and defeat the purpose of sustainable packaging. To enhance recyclability and minimise environmental impact, consider the following best practices:

  • Opt for Mono-materials: Mono-materials are labels (or packaging) made from a single type of material. When labels are made from a mix of different materials, separating them for recycling can be difficult. Mono-materials streamline this process, making it more efficient and cost-effective.
  • Labels should ideally be made from the same material as the main body of the packaging, especially for flexible packaging structures.
  • If a different material is used, it should be designed for easy removal—either by the consumer (not preferred) or through a wash-off process for material separation and consequent recycling.
  • Labels on plastic packaging should be recyclable and should not exceed 30% of the packaging surface presented to Near-Infrared (NIR) optical sorting equipment.
  • Paper labels should be avoided on plastic packaging intended for recycling, as they can interfere with the recycling stream.
  • Compostable packaging should be paired with compostable labels to maintain the integrity of the disposal process. Compostable labels on compostable packaging will lead to contamination within the process.
  • Water-resistant or durable labels for cosmetics and beverages should still meet sustainability standards without compromising performance.

At Lotus Labels, we guide our customers in choosing the best sustainable materials that align with their product packaging and disposal methods.

Consumer Preferences & the Evolving Market

The shift towards sustainability is driven by increasing consumer awareness. Studies show that more consumers are willing to pay a premium for environmentally friendly products, and they are actively seeking brands that align with their values. Sustainable labels not only enhance your brand’s eco-credentials but also help meet regulatory requirements and industry standards.
